Our commitment to creators

At Korespa, we believe that creativity, knowledge, photography, journalism, design and intellectual work deserve to be recognised and protected.

Copyright is not simply a legal requirement for us. It is part of the principle that creators should receive appropriate recognition for their work and retain the rights granted to them by law.

For this reason, Korespa makes reasonable efforts to identify the origin, author, licence or source of third-party material used on our website and to use content only where we believe we have a lawful basis to do so.

This policy applies to photographs, illustrations, graphics, videos, audio, written material and other intellectual works appearing on Korespa.

Photographs and images

Korespa pays particular attention to photographic material.

Where appropriate and where the information is available, photographs and other visual material normally include a credit or source indication close to or underneath the image.

Depending on the material, this may identify:

the photographer;
the creator;
the copyright holder;
the photographic agency;
the publisher;
the originating website;
the image library;
the applicable licence;
or another relevant source.

A source credit should not, by itself, be interpreted as meaning that copyright does not exist or that attribution alone creates permission to use a work. Korespa separately considers the applicable licence, permission, copyright status or other lawful basis for using the material.

Content we may use

Depending on the circumstances, material published by Korespa may include:

original material created for Korespa;
material commissioned by Korespa;
material supplied with the permission of its creator or rights holder;
commercially licensed material;
material made available under Creative Commons or similar licences;
material expressly released for reuse;
material in the public domain;
material supplied through press, publicity or media resources where publication is permitted;
embedded content provided through authorised services;
material used where an applicable legal exception or limitation permits its use;
and other material for which Korespa reasonably believes it has a lawful basis for publication.

Where a licence contains attribution, modification, commercial-use or other conditions, Korespa aims to observe those conditions.

Free and openly licensed material

The fact that an image or other work can be viewed or downloaded free of charge on the Internet does not automatically mean that it is free from copyright.

Korespa therefore aims to distinguish between content that is merely accessible online and content that has actually been licensed or otherwise made legally available for reuse.

When we use material distributed under a free or open licence, we may periodically review the original source and licence information.

This is particularly important because websites, repositories, licence descriptions and ownership information can change over time.

Where reasonably possible, Korespa retains information about the source or licence applicable when material was selected for publication.

Attribution and credits

Korespa believes that recognising creators is good practice even in situations where attribution may not be legally required.

For this reason, our general policy is to provide an identifiable source or credit for third-party photographic material whenever this can reasonably be established.

The precise format may vary according to the licence, source and information available.

If you are the author of a work displayed on Korespa and believe that a credit is missing, incomplete or incorrect, please contact us. We will be happy to investigate and, where appropriate, correct or expand the attribution.

Respect for moral rights

Korespa recognises that copyright encompasses more than economic rights.

Where applicable, we also seek to respect creators’ moral rights, including appropriate recognition of authorship and the integrity of their work.

We do not intentionally attribute a work to the wrong creator, remove a required attribution or present someone else’s work as our own.

Altered and edited images

Images may sometimes be resized, cropped, compressed or otherwise technically adapted to make them suitable for publication across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

Where a licence restricts modification, Korespa aims to respect those restrictions.

We also aim to avoid editing third-party material in a way that misrepresents the creator, the work or the circumstances depicted.

Where substantial alteration, illustration, compositing or AI-assisted modification is relevant to understanding an image, Korespa may provide additional information to distinguish that material from an unaltered documentary photograph.

Artificial intelligence and intellectual property

The development of generative artificial intelligence creates new questions regarding intellectual property, attribution and provenance.

Korespa does not consider the use of AI to eliminate the importance of copyright or creators’ rights.

Where AI-generated or substantially AI-modified material is used, Korespa aims to distinguish it from third-party photographic works where doing so is relevant to the reader.

Our copyright review principles also apply when AI tools are involved in the production or modification of content.

Editorial quotations and extracts

From time to time Korespa may quote or refer to third-party publications as part of journalism, commentary, criticism, review, reporting, research or similar editorial activity.

When doing so, we aim to use only the amount reasonably necessary for the relevant editorial purpose and to identify the source where appropriate.

The presence of a quotation or reference does not imply ownership by Korespa of the original work.

Embedded third-party content

Korespa articles may occasionally contain content embedded from third-party platforms.

Such material remains subject to the copyright, terms and policies of the relevant creator and platform.

Embedding content does not mean that Korespa claims ownership of that material.

Our legal framework

Korespa seeks to operate in accordance with applicable copyright and intellectual-property legislation, particularly the legal frameworks applicable within the United Kingdom and European Union.

These include, where applicable, the principles contained in:

the UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and subsequent amendments;
applicable UK intellectual-property legislation;
applicable European Union copyright legislation;
Directive 2001/29/EC concerning copyright and related rights in the information society;
Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market;
the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works;
the WIPO Copyright Treaty;
and other applicable national and international intellectual-property rules.

Because copyright law may vary between jurisdictions, Korespa does not claim that a single policy can represent every copyright rule in every country. Our intention is to respect internationally recognised copyright principles and comply with the laws applicable to our activities.

Copyright concerns and takedown requests

Despite the care taken when selecting and reviewing material, mistakes can occur.

Ownership can change, licences can be modified, incorrect information can be supplied by a source, material can be incorrectly attributed, or information that was previously available may subsequently change.

If you are an author, photographer, creator, agency, publisher, rights holder or authorised representative and believe that any material appearing on Korespa infringes your rights, please contact us.

We take such notifications seriously.

Please provide, where possible:

your name or organisation;
your contact details;
identification of the work concerned;
the URL of the Korespa page where the material appears;
the location of the relevant photograph, text or other content on that page;
an explanation of the rights you believe are affected;
information showing that you are the creator, rights holder or authorised representative where reasonably available;
and the action you would like us to consider.

We do not require unnecessarily complex formalities simply to alert us to a possible problem.

Our 24–48 hour review commitment

When Korespa receives a credible copyright or intellectual-property notification, our objective is to begin reviewing it promptly.

Where there is a reasonable indication that material may have been published incorrectly, Korespa may temporarily remove or disable access to the material while the matter is investigated.

Our objective is to review credible requests and, where removal is appropriate, remove or disable the relevant material within approximately 24 to 48 hours whenever reasonably practicable.

Complex cases may require additional investigation, particularly where ownership, licensing or competing rights are unclear.

Prevention of future reuse

Removing an item is not necessarily enough.

Where Korespa determines that material should not have been used, we may also record sufficient information internally to help prevent the same material from being unintentionally selected or published again.

Depending on the circumstances, this may include recording:

the relevant image or content reference;
the originating source;
the rights holder;
the reason for removal;
relevant licence information;
and restrictions concerning future use.

The purpose of this process is to learn from copyright notifications rather than simply resolving individual incidents.

Corrections instead of removal

Not every copyright concern necessarily requires removal.

In some situations the appropriate resolution may be:

correcting the photographer’s name;
adding a missing credit;
correcting the source;
adding licence information;
replacing an incorrect image;
correcting a link;
updating copyright information;
or obtaining additional permission.

Where appropriate, Korespa will seek the solution that best respects both the creator’s rights and the integrity of the published article.

No ownership claim over third-party material

Unless expressly stated otherwise, the appearance of third-party material on Korespa does not mean that Korespa owns the copyright in that material.

Korespa’s own articles, original photography, graphics, branding, design and other original material may themselves be protected by copyright and other intellectual-property rights.

A culture of respect for creative work

Korespa believes that journalism and creativity depend upon an ecosystem in which writers, photographers, artists, developers, designers, researchers and other creators can have their work respected.

Our objective is therefore not merely to satisfy the minimum requirements of copyright law.

We want attribution, provenance and respect for intellectual work to be normal parts of the Korespa publishing process.

If something is wrong, we want to know about it.

If a creator has not been properly credited, we want to correct it.

If material should not be on Korespa, we want to remove it.

And if we identify a problem, we want our systems to help prevent the same mistake from happening again.

Please include the URL of the relevant Korespa page and enough information for us to identify the material concerned.

We will review legitimate notifications as promptly as reasonably possible.
