Legends, mysteries, horses, palaces, fortress,\u2026an ancient Muslim city that today lives and breathes with each visitor who walks its streets and magnificent rooms.<\/p>\n

But what is the Alhambra in Granada?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Alhambra<\/strong> is a Nasrid palace complex and fortress called the alcazaba<\/a> , (from Arabic: \u0627\u0644\u0642\u0635\u0628\u0629 al-qa\u1e63bah \u2018citadel\u2019). All this with magnificent patios and gardens on top of the Sabika hill, integrated into a natural environment close to the Sierra Nevada in Granada, Andalusia, Spain.<\/p>\n

Its maximum splendor is found in the interiors of the Nasrid palaces, whose decoration is among the pinnacles of Andalusian art<\/a> .<\/p>\n

During the Nasrid period, the Alhambra<\/strong> was an autonomous city separated from the rest of the Granada city below. It contained most of the amenities of a Muslim city, such as a Friday mosque, hammams (public baths), roads, houses, artisan workshops, a tannery, and a sophisticated water supply system.<\/p>\n

The Alhambra<\/strong> is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best preserved in the historical Islamic world.<\/p>\n

The conservation and maintenance criteria of such a special place advise restricting its annual visits to less than three million. The protection it enjoys is essential, which is why tickets are regulated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What does the name Alhambra mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Alhambra<\/strong> (\/\u00e6l\u02c8h\u00e6mbr\u0259\/, Spanish: [a\u02c8lamb\u027ea]; Arabic: \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0627\u0621, romanized: Al-\u1e24amr\u0101\u02be, pronounced [al\u0127am\u02c8ra\u02d0\u0294], literally means \u2018The Red One\u2019.<\/p>\n

The reference to the color \u201cred\u201d in the name is due to the reddish color of its walls, coming from the iron oxide in the local clay used for this type of construction.<\/p>\n

How old is the Alhambra?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The complex was started in 1238 by Muhammad I ibn al-Ahmar, the first Nasrid emir and founder of the Emirate of Granada, which was the last Muslim state of Al-Andalus.<\/p>\n

When did it stop being an Arab city and why?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Abu Abdallah Muhammad XII (Arabic: \u0623\u0628\u0648 \u0639\u0628\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0627\u0644\u062b\u0627\u0646\u064a \u0639\u0634\u0631) (c. 1460\u20131533), known in Europe as Boabdil<\/a> , in Spanish, was the twenty-second and last Nasrid ruler of the Emirate of Granada in Iberia.<\/p>\n

Boadil surrendered the Emirate of Granada in 1492 without the Alhambra<\/strong> itself suffering any damage when the vastly superior army of the Catholic Monarchs (King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile) arrived at the gates of the city.<\/p>\n

Ferdinand and Isabella were so amazed when they entered that they established the royal court in the Alhambra<\/strong> , and it was there that Christopher Columbus received royal backing for his expedition.<\/p>\n

After being abandoned for centuries, the Alhambra was rediscovered after the defeat of Napoleon I, among others, by Washington Irving<\/strong><\/a> , whose Tales from the Alhambra<\/strong> (1832) brought international attention to the site.<\/p>\n

The Alhambra was one of the first Islamic monuments to become the object of modern scientific study and has undergone numerous restorations since the 19th century.<\/p>\n
