He was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla<\/a> , Colombia. She is the only child of William Mebarak Chadid, an American born in New York of Lebanese origin who immigrated to Colombia at the age of five, and his second wife Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, a Colombian of Spanish descent. She has 8 older half-siblings from her father\u2019s previous marriage.<\/p>\n

Shakira<\/i> (\u0634\u0627\u0643\u0631\u0629 \u0161\u0101kira<\/i> ) means \u201cgrateful\u201d in Arabic. She is the feminine form of the name Shakir<\/i> (\u0634\u0627\u0643\u0631 \u0161\u0101kir<\/i> ). Her middle name, Isabel<\/i> , comes from her maternal family and is of Spanish origin. She liked to sing for her classmates and teachers at her Catholic school, but in second grade she was not accepted into the school choir because her vibrato was too loud. The music teacher told her that she sounded \u201clike a goat.\u201d In school, she was known as \u201cthe belly dancing girl\u201d, and every Friday she would show off a new number that she had learned.<\/sup><\/p>\n

At the age of eight, she wrote her first song, titled \u201cTus gafas oscuras\u201d, inspired by her father, who for years wore dark glasses to hide the pain of the death of one of his children, when Shakira was two years old.<\/p>\n

At eight years old, Shakira\u2019s father filed for bankruptcy, while the details of the process were finalized, he went to live with relatives in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Barranquilla, she was surprised to discover that much of her parents\u2019 possessions had been sold; later, she said, \u201cIn my childish head, that was the end of the world.\u201d To show her that things could be worse, her father took her to a nearby park so she could see the orphans who lived there. The image of her struck her and she said to herself \u201cone day I will help these children, when I become a famous artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the age of fourteen, she released her first album in 1991, titled Magia<\/i> , which includes songs written by herself, among which \u201d Magia<\/a> \u201c, \u201d Tonight I\u2019m going with you<\/a> \u201d and \u201cYour dark glasses\u201d stand out. However, the album turned out to be a commercial failure, selling only a thousand units.<\/p>\n
