Cal\u00edgula\" class=\"wp-image-4168\" title=\"Who was Seneca? 5\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F03d05-cc-Px-aut-Meelimello-Caligula-modf.webp 866w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F03d05-cc-Px-aut-Meelimello-Caligula-modf-300x259.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F03d05-cc-Px-aut-Meelimello-Caligula-modf-768x663.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F03d05-cc-Px-aut-Meelimello-Caligula-modf-648x560.webp 648w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Busto del emperador romano Cal\u00edgula<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cal%C3%ADgula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caligula<\/a> succeeded <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiberio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tiberius<\/a>, in the year 37, and Seneca had already become the main orator in the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This aroused the envy of the new Caesar and he ordered his first execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a woman, close to Caligula\u2019s inner circle, got him to overturn the sentence by telling her that Seneca would soon die by himself, due to his poor health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a consequence of this, Seneca withdrew from public life as a Roman senator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Caligula\u2019s death, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claudio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Claudius<\/a> is crowned emperor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seneca, who continued to be a relevant person in Roman politics, opposed Claudio\u2019s accession to the throne along with the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because of his influence in the Senate, the new emperor considered him a potential political enemy and was sentenced to death a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this sentence was also finally commuted, for an exile to <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C3%B3rcega\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C\u00f3rcega<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\" id=\"attachment_4169\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F04d05-cc-Px-aut-Albrecht-Fietz-Coliseo-romano-1024x682.webp\" alt=\"S\u00e9neca. Coliseo romano\" class=\"wp-image-4169\" title=\"Who was Seneca? 6\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Coliseo romano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The banishment lasted until the year 49, when <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agripina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agrippina<\/a>, the emperor\u2019s new wife, called him back to Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pretor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praetor<\/a> in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And later, he was appointed guardian of the young Lucio Domicio Enobarbo, son of Agrippina\u2019s previous marriage and future Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ner%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nero.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\" id=\"attachment_4170\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"887\" height=\"1330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F05d05-cc-Px-aut-Denis-doukhan.webp\" alt=\"S\u00e9neca. Ner\u00f3n\" class=\"wp-image-4170\" title=\"Who was Seneca? 7\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F05d05-cc-Px-aut-Denis-doukhan.webp 887w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F05d05-cc-Px-aut-Denis-doukhan-200x300.webp 200w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F05d05-cc-Px-aut-Denis-doukhan-768x1152.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F05d05-cc-Px-aut-Denis-doukhan-373x560.webp 373w, https:\/\/www.korespa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/12\/kc-Art00020-F05d05-cc-Px-aut-Denis-doukhan-600x900.webp 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ner\u00f3n, emperador romano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How did he come to rule the Roman Empire?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the year 54, Emperor Claudius died (poisoned by Agrippina herself) and his stepson Nero rose to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the rise to power of the young <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ner%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nero<\/a>, 17 years old, Seneca was appointed political adviser and minister of the new emperor, along with the military officer <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexto_Afranio_Burro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sextus Afranio Burro<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the next eight years, Seneca and Donkey ruled the Roman Empire de facto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(This period was later singled out by Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trajano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trajan<\/a> as one of the periods of \u201cthe best and most just government in the entire imperial age.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This attracted numerous enemies to him, and he was forced to retire from politics in 62.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it was not enough, so he was falsely accused of participating in <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conjura_de_Pis%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Piso\u2019s conspiracy<\/a> against Nero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, his former student, Emperor Nero, sentenced him to death for the third time in his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, anticipating cruel condemnation by Nero, he committed suicide in AD 65.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Seneca\u2019s influence on later generations was immense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a writer, Seneca went down in history as one of the greatest representatives of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estoicismo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stoicism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Letters to Lucilio<\/em> have been compared to a <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autoayuda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-help book.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in fact, following the film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gladiator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gladiator<\/a><\/em>, both these and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meditaciones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meditations<\/a><\/em> of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marco_Aurelio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marcus Aurelius<\/a> were republished with great success in the Anglo-Saxon world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining works of Seneca can be divided into four sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>moral dialogues <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Di%C3%A1logo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">_<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ep%C3%ADstola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cards<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tragedia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tragedies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epigrama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">epigrams<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seneca\u2019s philosophy is diluted in these<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More information and references:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">en.wikipedia.org (2019).
